EU accessibility and GDPR for WordPress

Make your WordPress site legal in the EU, and usable by everyone.

Since June 2025 the European Accessibility Act applies to sites that sell to EU customers, and 2026 is the first year authorities are checking. I audit your WordPress site, fix what fails, and give you the paperwork that proves it.

What the law actually asks of a small business site

If you sell online to people in the EU, the site has to work with a screen reader and a keyboard, have enough contrast, and have forms that say what went wrong.

The three things that fail most often

  1. The cookie bannerCannot be closed with a keyboard, pre-ticks “accept,” or loads Google Analytics before anyone agrees.
  2. Forms and buttons with no labelsIcon-only buttons, placeholder text used as the label, error messages in red with no words.
  3. Contrast and text in imagesLight gray on white, headlines baked into images, hover-only menus.
What you get

Audit first, then fix, then paperwork

01

Full WCAG 2.1 AA audit

Every template on the site tested with automated tools and by hand with a screen reader and keyboard only.

02

GDPR and cookie review

What loads before consent, whether consent is real, whether the privacy policy matches what the site actually does, and where data goes.

03

Remediation on WordPress and Elementor

Headings, labels, alt text, focus states, contrast, skip links, keyboard menus, form errors, video captions.

04

WooCommerce checkout made accessible

Product filters, cart, checkout fields and payment steps tested end to end with a keyboard and a screen reader.

05

Accessibility statement and records

A public accessibility statement in the form the EAA expects, plus an internal record of what was tested and fixed.

06

Retest and ongoing checks

A retest after remediation, then a quarterly check on the care plan so a new plugin or a new page does not quietly break compliance.

FAQ

Questions EU owners ask about this

Does the European Accessibility Act apply to my business?

If you sell products or services online to consumers in the EU and you have ten or more staff or more than two million euros in annual turnover, yes. Below that you are exempt from the EAA, though GDPR still applies and some countries have their own rules. Tell me your size and where you sell, and I will tell you straight.

Can an accessibility overlay plugin fix this?

No. Overlays add a widget that changes font size and contrast for the visitor. They do not fix missing labels, broken keyboard navigation or an inaccessible checkout, and several EU and US rulings have said as much. The fixes have to be in the site itself.

Is WCAG 2.1 or 2.2 the target?

The law references EN 301 549, which maps to WCAG 2.1 AA. I fix to 2.1 AA and pick up the handful of extra 2.2 criteria where they are cheap to do, so you are ahead of the next revision.

How long does remediation take?

A typical five to ten page business site takes one to two weeks after the audit. A WooCommerce store is usually three to four weeks. Nothing goes live untested, and you review it on a staging copy first.
